Abstract

This study explores the Neruda’s Impact on Latin American Political Poetry and Activism. Pablo Neruda's impact on Latin American political poetry and activism is profound and multifaceted, reflecting his deep engagement with social justice and revolutionary ideals. As a poet, Neruda utilized his literary craft to address and challenge the socio-political issues of his time, becoming a pivotal figure in shaping the region's political consciousness. His early work, such as “Veinte poemas de amor y una canción desesperada” (Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair), established him as a prominent literary voice, but it was his later, politically charged poetry that solidified his role as an activist. Neruda's embrace of Marxism and his support for leftist causes were central to his poetic expression and political activism. His epic “Canto General” (General Song) interweaves Latin America's history with themes of resistance and social justice, reflecting his commitment to the struggles of the oppressed and the marginalized. His poetry served as both a call to action and a rallying cry for revolutionary movements, resonating with activists and reformists across the continent. Neruda's involvement in Chilean politics, particularly his support for Salvador Allende and his role as a senator, further underscores his influence on political activism. His activism often led to periods of exile and repression, yet his poetry remained a powerful tool for advocacy and resistance. Neruda’s legacy endures in the continued relevance of his work, which continues to inspire and mobilize movements for social change and justice throughout Latin America and beyond. His life and poetry illustrate the transformative potential of art in the struggle for political and social reform.
