This paper explores the Gothic tradition in English literature, tracing its evolution from the early 19th century to contemporary manifestations. Beginning with Mary Shelley’s seminal work "Frankenstein", the paper examines how the Gothic genre has developed over time, focusing on its recurring themes of horror, the supernatural, and the exploration of the human psyche. The study also looks at how modern Gothic literature has adapted these themes to address contemporary anxieties, including the role of technology, identity, and societal fears. By analyzing key texts and authors, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of the Gothic tradition and its enduring influence on English literature.
