Abstract

This research paper explores the profound impact of British colonialism on the Indian education system, focusing on the policies implemented by the British to reshape and control education. The colonial education policy, introduced primarily to serve the British Empire’s needs, played a pivotal role in transforming the traditional systems of learning and creating a new class of educated Indians who would assist in administering the colonial state. This paper examines the transition from indigenous educational models to British-introduced Western education, the creation of new institutions like universities, the role of English as a medium of instruction, and the long-lasting implications of these changes. It evaluates the socio-economic and cultural impact of these policies on Indian society, particularly in terms of class and caste divisions. The paper concludes by discussing how colonial education policies laid the groundwork for modern education in India, while also perpetuating systems of inequality and dependence.
