Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) is considered as an important aquaculture species in many Asian and some European countries. Cyprinus carpio (Common carp) was introduced in India to promote composite fish farming. Cyprinus carpio is considered as a "natural specialist" or "ecological engineer" because of its adaptability to survive in wide range of ecological conditions. The growth rates of common carp vary greatly depending on temperature, food availability, and population density in different regions. The common introduced in India in 1939 adapted well in Indian waters and soon become a dominant fish species in majority of water bodies. This paper reviews the introduction and current status of Common carp in India particularly in valley of Kashmir.
