Abstract

As per the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) – 5 report, higher number of children under the age of five years in Gujarat are suffering from various forms of malnutrition. The proportion of malnourished children in Gujarat is higher than the national average. Apart from the economic perspective, various sociological and demographic factors also contribute to it. Primary objective of this paper is to explore the determinants of malnutrition. Three anthropometric indicators of malnutrition, namely stunted, wasted and, underweight are considered as outcome variables. A set of determinants of malnutrition is compiled based on reviewed research frameworks and availability of data. Data are compiled from the fifth round of NFHS conducted during 2020-22. After checking the normality and multicollinearity, researchers come up with six indicators of malnutrition for the multiple regression analysis. These six indicators are women who married before the age of 18 years, women who had at least four antenatal care visits, women who had third or higher birth order, mothers who had an antenatal check up in the first trimester, children who had breastfed within one hour of birth and children aged 6-59 months who are anaemic. Results show that women who had married before the age of 18 years is significant determinant for stunted and wasted. While, the women who had married before the age of 18 years and children aged 6-59 months who are anaemic are the significant determinants for the underweight.
