Abstract

The study tries to explore the determinants of capital structure of non-financial firms of India, which constituted CNX NIFTY index. This study has investigated into the influence of five determinants on capital structure –profitability, liquidity, tangibility, size of firm and business risk. Considering leverage as dependent variable and profitability, liquidity, tangibility, size of firm and business risk of the firms as independent variables and running multiple regression analysis on the dataset of non financial companies of India for a of 5 years, the study attempts to identify the significant positive or negative impact of the determinants of capital structure on leverage of the firms. The analysis reveals that the tangibility and size of the non-financial firms have statistically positive relationship with debt-equity ratio which supports many earlier research findings and profitability, liquidity and business risk have significant negative relations with leverage.
