Abstract

Social media algorithms are a key factor in how a brand performs in today’s digital marketing landscape and how customers engage with the brand. These algorithms, built with machine learning and user interactions analysis, prioritize content by relevance, interaction timelines and engagement patterns and this all impacts on what contents the user is seeing on his/her feed. This research is designed to understand how social media algorithms impact brand reach and subsequently affect customer engagement rates including likes, shares, comments, click-through rates and conversion behavior. The study is conceptual and analytical and aims at gauging the impact of algorithmic filtering on the area of organic reach and paid campaigns in platforms like Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok. It also probes the following implications for businesses in the area of content strategy, influencer marketing and customer relationship management. The results highlight the importance of visibility, mediated by algorithms, and point to brands that must take a multi-dimensional content approach that is interactive, more personalized and focused on values to succeed. But it also shows that there are problems like diminished reach from organic content, algorithms are biased and dependant on platform-specific rules, which can have an impact on smaller businesses. Although social media algorithms are useful in improving the user experience and making content relevant, they also challenge brands to adapt their strategies for marketing to stay visible and remain engaging for their customers in a overwhelmed digital landscape.
