Abstract

India's unicorn start-ups are playing an active role in shaping the future of innovativeness, disruption and economic growth in India, in the rapidly changing digital economy. The goal of this research paper is to explore the correlation between strategic leadership and organizational agility, focusing on a small sample of unicorn startups in India's mobility, edtech, e commerce, and fintech industries. The study proposes to gain an understanding of how the strategic leadership practices affect an organization's capacity to react quickly and effectively to dynamism within the market, disruption by technology and competitiveness. The characteristics of strategic leadership in unicorn startups involve visionary decision-making, a willingness to take risks, and being flexible and adaptable, as well as prioritizing innovation-driven growth. Organizational agility, however, is the ability of companies to detect changes in the environment, act on opportunities as they arise, reconfigure resources and processes when and where appropriate. A mixed-method approach is taken with a combination of qualitative findings from the leadership interviews and secondary case based findings with quantitative findings from organizational performance indicators. The results indicate that transformational and entrepreneurial leadership styles have a significant impact on organizations' agility through creating a culture of experimentation, decentralized decision-making and quick iteration. Furthermore, electronic skills, cross-function collaboration and data-based decision-making serve as mediating elements between leadership strategy and agility results. The study also indicates that unicorn startups with well established strategic leadership frameworks tend to have greater resiliency times of running into market fluctuations and regulatory uncertainties. The paper builds upon the existing body of work on startup ecosystems and empirically elucidates the nature of the relationship between influence in leadership and agility in a high-growth firm. It also has practical applications for startup founders, investors and policy makers, all of whom have a vested interest in fostering leadership skills that span digital transformation and are marked by a high pace of change. In conclusion, the study highlights that strategic leadership is more than just a managerial role, it is also an essential component of long-term organizational agility in the competitive realm of Indian unicorn startups.
