Abstract

The “Uniform Civil Code” (UCC) that India is proposing has long been a divisive issue. The objective is to establish a single set of laws that govern personal matters like marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption for all individuals, irrespective of their religious beliefs. However, because of India’s variety in religion and culture, implementing a UCC is difficult. In this research study, the idea of the UCC and its ramifications within the Indian context are being critically examined. The study examines the historical context of UCC alongwith its legal implications and sociological ramifications. It discusses the competing arguments surrounding the UCC, including concerns about religious freedom, cultural diversity, and gender justice. The study also examines the legal rulings and Constitutional framework related to the UCC. The necessity for a sophisticated and inclusive strategy that preserves constitutional rights, advances gender equality, and respects cultural variety is highlighted in this paper.
