Abstract

Thermal physics plays a vital role in food storage and refrigeration by providing the scientific principles necessary for controlling temperature, heat transfer, and energy flow within food systems. Food preservation depends largely on reducing the biological, chemical, and physical processes that lead to deterioration and spoilage. Refrigeration and freezing technologies achieve this objective by removing heat from food products and maintaining them at temperatures that inhibit microbial growth and enzymatic activity. The effectiveness of these preservation methods depends on the thermal properties of food, including specific heat capacity, thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, density, and latent heat of phase transition. Thermal physics also explains the operation of refrigeration systems through thermodynamic principles. Refrigerators, freezers, cold storage facilities, and refrigerated transportation systems are designed based on the laws of thermodynamics and heat transfer mechanisms. Modern food industries increasingly rely on accurate thermal analysis to improve energy efficiency, reduce food waste, and maintain food safety throughout the cold chain. Furthermore, emerging technologies such as phase change materials, thermal energy storage systems, and smart refrigeration controls demonstrate how thermal science contributes to sustainable food preservation. This article examines the role of thermal physics in food storage and refrigeration, focusing on thermal properties of food, heat transfer mechanisms, refrigeration cycles, food safety, cold-chain logistics, and future technological developments.
