THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SECURITY
Abstract
Climate change is a major global threat that has wide-reaching effects on agricultural productivity and food security. This paper explores the economic consequences of climate change on agriculture and food security, including the following major elements: variable temperature ranges, variable precipitation patterns and extreme weather events, as well as their impacts on crop yield, production costs and market stability. This research investigates the impact of climate shocks on farmers’ incomes, food prices, and overall economic stability, based on the utilization of both economic models and empirical data. The consequences indicated that such extreme shifts in climate were causing reduced agricultural productivity, increased input costs and food prices, as well as adverse effects on wealth, particularly affecting smallholder farmers and other vulnerable groups. Climate change will create more rivalry for some resources — like water and food-producing land — making life pricier for impoverished farmers. The research also identifies what is most important in adapting — a combination of sustainable agriculture, tech advances and policy changes — that can help mitigate the damaging effects. Together, this body of work underscores the vital need for climate-resilient agricultural policies, financial support systems, and global cooperation in ensuring food security and economic resilience. The study also makes recommendations on how policymakers can strengthen adaptive capacity and build resilience in an agricultural sector facing unprecedented climate uncertainties in the future.
