Abstract

In this paper, the study of living memorial stones has been conducted in the Kishtwar District of Jammu and Kashmir and its comparative study with some peripheral areas of Himachal Pradesh. The study enumerates some sites in Kishtwar. The region has evidence of living memorial stones, both rude and dressed, erected in memory of the deceased. The data related to these sites were collected through interviews with local people. An observation method was used to determine the morphological features of the rocks and the present use of these memorial stones. The measurements of the memorial stones were taken by visiting the sites. The memorial stones at several places were partially/completely covered with soil; therefore, the maximum height was taken only from the surface level. All data related to the site were based on surface observations. The study throw light on the similarity of these sites with the memorial stones of Himachal Pradesh in general.
