POLITICAL PARTIES ARE FOUNDATIONAL ELEMENTS OF DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE – A STUDY
Abstract
The party system and electoral framework further influence policy outcomes. Single-party dominant systems often see streamlined policy-making, while multi-party systems require coalition-building, leading to negotiated and sometimes compromised policies. Proportional representation tends to produce a multiparty environment with diverse interests, whereas majoritarian systems often result in more decisive, albeit less representative, policies. Party discipline also plays a significant role. High party discipline ensures cohesive policy-making aligned with party directives, whereas low discipline can lead to varied and inconsistent policies. Additionally, external factors such as globalization, international influences, public opinion, and media scrutiny impact how parties shape policies and respond to societal needs. Overall, political parties are pivotal in shaping democratic policy outcomes. Their role is mediated by the specific democratic context, the structure of the party system, electoral mechanisms, and external pressures, reflecting a complex interplay between internal party dynamics and external influences.
