Abstract

Decentralization, a process of distributing power and responsibilities to local levels of government, is essential for enhancing the efficiency and inclusiveness of administrative governance. In India, where governance spans a vast territory with diverse social, cultural, and economic landscapes, decentralization plays a crucial role in empowering local governments and ensuring that development benefits reach the grassroots. This article examines the evolution of decentralization and local government systems in India, focusing on constitutional provisions, the role of Panchayats and Municipalities, challenges faced in their functioning, and the potential impact of decentralization on inclusive governance. The paper explores the legal framework, historical developments, and contemporary issues regarding local governance, suggesting reforms that could strengthen decentralization and contribute to India's democratic consolidation.
