Abstract

Regionalism, the movement advocating for increased regional autonomy and self-governance, significantly influences national cohesion and governance. This study explores the dual effects of regionalism, examining both its benefits and challenges within the context of national unity and administrative efficiency. Regionalism can enhance localized governance by allowing regional authorities to address specific needs and preferences of their communities more effectively than a centralized government. This localized approach fosters improved service delivery, tailored policies, and increased political participation. Moreover, regionalism supports cultural preservation, enabling regions to maintain and celebrate unique traditions, languages, and identities, which can contribute to a richer and more diverse national culture. Additionally, regional autonomy can spur innovation, as regions experiment with novel solutions to local issues that may later benefit the nation as a whole. Conversely, regionalism can lead to fragmentation and weaken national cohesion. As regional identities and interests become more pronounced, they may overshadow a shared national identity, causing divisions and tensions between regions and the central government. Inequality may also be exacerbated, with wealthier regions benefiting more from regional autonomy while poorer areas struggle with limited resources. Furthermore, regionalism introduces governance complexity, with overlapping jurisdictions and coordination difficulties between regional and central authorities. The impact of regionalism on national cohesion and governance is multifaceted. While it offers opportunities for enhanced local governance and cultural preservation, it also presents challenges that must be managed to maintain national unity and effective administration. Balancing regional autonomy with national cohesion is crucial for leveraging the benefits of regionalism while mitigating its potential drawbacks.
