Abstract

AL Basham was a well-known historian and Indologist who made a significant contribution to our knowledge of Indian cultural history. His best-known work, “The Wonder That Was India,” published in 1954, is still one of the most complete and accessible accounts of ancient Indian civilization, helping us make sense of the complex stories India has told about itself, with culture, religion and society always intertwined.
