Ornamental Plant Diversity In Home Gardens Of Uttara Kannada District, Karnataka, India: Insights Into Ecological And Cultural Significance.
Abstract
Home gardens are vital repositories of biodiversity, encompassing a wide array of ornamental plant species that contribute to ecological, aesthetic, and cultural values. This study explores the diversity of ornamental plants in the Uttara Kannada District, Karnataka, India, renowned for its diverse ecosystems. From May 2017 to February 2019, 200 home gardens were surveyed to identify and categorize ornamental plants using established botanical literature. A total of 219 species were documented, comprising trees, climbers, herbs, and shrubs. Dominant families included Asteraceae, Acanthaceae, Malvaceae, and Apocynaceae, with Asteraceae exhibiting the highest diversity. Comparative analyses with studies from nearby regions underscored both shared patterns and unique characteristics in ornamental plant diversity. The prevalence of species like Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. highlighted their cultural significance and aesthetic appeal. This comprehensive inventory enhances our understanding of local flora and emphasizes the pivotal role of home gardens in urban and rural landscapes for conserving plant diversity. Future research could further explore ecological interactions and conservation strategies for sustainable gardening practices.
