Abstract

Maya Angelou’s poem And Still I Rise is a powerful and evocative exploration of resilience, self-empowerment, and defiance in the face of adversity. Through vivid imagery, repetition, and bold language, Angelou conveys the unyielding strength of the human spirit, particularly in the face of societal oppression and personal hardship. The poem centers on the speaker’s refusal to be defeated by racism, sexism, and historical trauma. Angelou presents resilience not as a passive act of survival, but as an active and triumphant rising against external forces meant to suppress or diminish one’s identity and spirit. The poem’s repeated refrain, “I rise,” serves as both a declaration of self-determination and a challenge to the forces that seek to silence the speaker. This resilience is framed not merely as enduring pain but as an act of resistance, rooted in pride and the affirmation of one's identity. The speaker celebrates her strength, the legacy of her ancestors, and her refusal to conform to societal expectations. Through metaphors like the “black ocean” and “diamonds at the meeting of my thighs,” Angelou creates powerful symbols of empowerment, linking the speaker’s individual resilience to a collective, historical struggle for freedom and equality.
