THE ROLE OF PLAY-BASED LEARNING IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

Abstract

This study explores the Role of Play-Based Learning in Early Childhood Education. Play-based learning has emerged as a fundamental approach in early childhood education (ECE), recognizing that play is an essential vehicle through which young children explore, learn, and develop. During the formative years, typically defined as birth to eight years old, children experience rapid cognitive, social, emotional, and physical growth. This stage is critical, as the experiences children have can significantly shape their future learning trajectories and overall well-being. In the context of play-based learning, children engage in activities that are enjoyable and intrinsically motivating, allowing them to explore their interests and creativity. Through play, children develop key skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication. For instance, when children engage in imaginative play, they experiment with various roles and scenarios, fostering social skills, empathy, and emotional regulation. Similarly, constructive play with blocks or art materials enhances fine motor skills while encouraging spatial awareness and planning.
