Maternal and Child Healthcare in Telangana: A Historical Overview and Policy Impact Analysis (1947-2021)
Abstract
This study provides a comprehensive historical overview and policy impact analysis of maternal and child healthcare in Telangana from 1947 to 2021. Over the decades, Telangana has undergone significant transformations in its healthcare landscape, particularly in the areas of maternal and child health. The study traces the evolution of healthcare services, beginning with the challenges faced in the post-independence period, where high maternal and infant mortality rates were prevalent due to inadequate healthcare infrastructure and limited access to medical services. The research examines key government initiatives and policy interventions that have shaped maternal and child healthcare in Telangana, such as the establishment of Primary Health Centers (PHCs), the introduction of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), and the implementation of targeted programs like Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) and the KCR Kit Scheme. These policies have played a crucial role in improving maternal and child health outcomes, particularly in reducing mortality rates and increasing institutional deliveries. By providing a detailed historical context and evaluating the impact of various policies, this research aims to offer insights into the progress made and the areas that require further attention to ensure better healthcare outcomes for mothers and children in Telangana.
