EVALUATING THE IMPACT OF THE RYTHU BANDHU SCHEME ON REDUCING FARMER SUICIDES IN TELANGANA: A SOCIO-ECONOMIC ANALYSIS
Abstract
The agrarian crisis in Telangana has led to a significant number of farmer suicides, prompting the government to implement various support schemes. Among these, the Rythu Bandhu Scheme, launched in 2018, provides direct financial assistance to farmers to alleviate their economic distress. This research aims to evaluate the impact of the Rythu Bandhu Scheme on reducing farmer suicides in Telangana, with a particular focus on the socio-economic outcomes of the beneficiary farmers. By employing a mixed-method approach, including both qualitative and quantitative analyses, the study examines the correlation between financial support provided under the scheme and the well-being of farmers, particularly in terms of suicide prevention. The research utilizes primary data collected through field surveys and interviews with farmers, alongside secondary data from government reports and academic studies. The findings suggest that while the Rythu Bandhu Scheme has provided critical financial relief, its impact on reducing farmer suicides is nuanced, with other socio-economic factors also playing a significant role. The study concludes that while the scheme has contributed to improving the financial stability of farmers, additional measures are required to address the complex causes of suicides, such as indebtedness and mental health issues.
