Abstract

Quantum cryptography represents a revolutionary advancement in the field of secure communication, leveraging the principles of quantum mechanics to offer fundamentally unbreakable encryption. As the digital age continues to evolve, ensuring the confidentiality and integrity of data is increasingly critical. Traditional cryptographic methods, though widely used, are becoming vulnerable, particularly with the rise of quantum computing, which could break existing encryption algorithms. In this context, quantum cryptography emerges as the next frontier in secure communication, offering a new paradigm for safeguarding sensitive information. At the core of quantum cryptography is Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), which allows two parties to securely exchange encryption keys over potentially insecure channels. The key security feature of QKD lies in the principles of quantum mechanics—specifically, the Heisenberg uncertainty principle and quantum entanglement. These principles ensure that any attempt to eavesdrop on the transmitted key will disturb the quantum state, revealing the presence of the interceptor. The BB84 protocol, developed in 1984 by Charles Bennett and Gilles Brassard, laid the foundation for QKD, while subsequent protocols like E91 further refined the security features using quantum entanglement.
