THE IMPORTANCE OF SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING IN SCHOOLS
Abstract
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is an essential educational approach that equips students with the emotional intelligence, interpersonal skills, and resilience needed to succeed in life. It focuses on fostering self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness, relationship-building, and responsible decision-making—competencies that are critical for holistic development. SEL extends beyond academic instruction, addressing the emotional and social dimensions of learning to create well-rounded, compassionate individuals. In the Indian context, the integration of SEL in schools is particularly significant given the diverse socio-economic and cultural challenges faced by students. Issues such as poverty, gender inequality, caste discrimination, and mental health struggles often hinder academic performance and personal growth. SEL provides tools to navigate these challenges, fostering emotional resilience, empathy, and inclusivity in classrooms and beyond.
