Abstract

India faces a mounting waste management crisis, driven by rapid urbanization, industrial growth, and increasing consumption patterns. Conventional waste disposal methods, such as landfilling and incineration, have proven unsustainable, leading to severe environmental and public health challenges. In response, businesses in India are increasingly integrating Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives that focus on sustainable waste management and circular economy practices. This shift represents a transition from a linear "take-make-dispose" model to a circular approach that emphasizes waste reduction, recycling, and resource recovery. This paper explores how Indian companies are leveraging CSR to address waste management challenges while contributing to a circular economy. It examines government policies, industry-led initiatives, and best practices that have successfully transformed waste into valuable resources. Case studies from leading corporations, including Tata Group’s e-waste recycling initiatives, ITC’s ‘Wealth Out of Waste’ program, Hindustan Unilever’s plastic waste management efforts, and Reliance Industries’ circular economy approach to textile waste, highlight the impact of CSR in driving sustainability. Furthermore, the paper discusses the role of public-private partnerships in scaling waste management efforts and identifies key challenges, such as regulatory gaps, financial constraints, and technological limitations. It concludes with recommendations for businesses to enhance their CSR-driven waste management strategies, advocating for stronger policy support, innovation in recycling technologies, and broader stakeholder collaboration. By embedding circular economy principles into CSR policies, Indian businesses can not only mitigate environmental harm but also create economic value, aligning sustainability with profitability.
