Phytochemical constituents and antioxidant activity of the tuber Amorphophallus paeoniifolius (Dennst.) Nicolson (Araceae) in ethanolic extract from Kottoor, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

Abstract

The present study shows the phytochemicals and antioxidant eventuality of Amorphophallus paeoniifolius tuber. Both primary and secondary metabolites were detected in ethanol extract. Proximate analysis estimated the humidity content (81.29%), carbohydrate (1.201 µg/ g), crude fat (0.72%), free amino acid (0.028 µg/ g), protein (0.123 µg/ g), ash (9.7%),), fibre (0.87%) and lipid (0.87%) content of tuber of Amorphophallus paeoniifolius. Total alkaloids, phenolics, flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids, carbohydrate, saponins and steroid content of ethanol were also determined. The secondary metabolites were rich in ethanol extract with high terpenoids (2.190 µg/ g) followed by carbohydrate (1.201 µg/ g), tannins (0.499 µg/ g), flavonoids (0.426 µg/ g), phenolics (0.411 µg/ g), alkaloid (0.343 µg/ g), saponins (0.021 µg/ g), and steroids (0.013 µg/ g). The IC50 value for ethanolic extract by DPPH assay was (30.556 μg/ ml) which suggest Amorphophallus paeoniifolius as an implicit natural free revolutionary scavenger which would find use as an antioxidant.
