A RESPONSIBLE ROLE IN IMPARTING INFORMATION AND INFLUENCING PUBLIC OPINION

Abstract

The right to privacy is an integral part of the right to life and personal liberty guaranteed by Article 21 of the Constitution of India. The media is guaranteed the Constitutional freedom of the right to press under Article 19(1) (a). The freedom of the press is a part of the freedom of speech and expression guaranteed under Article 19(1) (a) of the Indian Constitution. The media as a fourth pillar of democracy has a responsible role in imparting information and influencing public opinion. However, the media has been involved in undertaking trials by transgressing into the domain of the Judiciary. The media trial violates the right to privacy guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution of India. There is a need to strike a balance between the media trial and the right to privacy.
