Abstract

The Panchakosha theory, as expounded in the Taittiriya Upanishad, presents a sophisticated model of human existence comprising five interpenetrating sheaths (koshas) that seemingly envelop the Atman or true Self. This theoretical article explores the hierarchical progression from Annamaya Kosha (the physical sheath) to Anandamaya Kosha (the bliss sheath), examining how this ancient Vedantic framework provides a systematic pathway toward self-realization. Drawing upon classical Upanishadic texts, Advaita Vedanta philosophy, and contemporary interpretations, this paper analyzes each kosha's characteristics, functions, and role in obscuring or revealing the true nature of consciousness. The study demonstrates that the Panchakosha model serves not merely as a philosophical abstraction but as a practical methodology for transcending layers of identification and achieving unity with the ultimate reality. By employing the discriminative approach of "neti, neti" (not this, not this), practitioners can systematically dissociate from each sheath and realize the unchanging, eternal Self that lies beyond all coverings. This article contributes to the growing discourse on integrating Eastern wisdom traditions with contemporary understanding of consciousness, personality, and holistic well-being.
