Historical Overview of Libraries and Their Future

Abstract

The evolution of academic libraries in India from the country's 1947 independence to the current era of artificial intelligence (AI) is a reflection of the country's larger transition from a newly independent state constructing its educational infrastructure to a digitally integrated knowledge economy. The foundational era of infrastructure growth, the automation and computerization phase, the digital library and internet revolution, and the current advent of AI-driven smart libraries are the four unique phases that this research study traces.
